Vardlokkur is an Old Norse word in two parts: vard is “warrant, guarantee, answer for; guard, watch, defend”; and lokkur is “magic song, magic charm”. Combined they create a ‘charm of surety’, a ‘song of warding’, an ‘answering song’. Assuredly, the latter part of this word is also related to lokka, meaning “to allure, entice”, so that these songs were meant to flatter the listeners – both natturer and human alike. As such, these songs / charms would have been designed using a specific poetic meter - to be pleasing to all listeners.
